This course will review the professional development of occupational therapy from a historical perspective and will study how past leaders of the profession have examined human occupation and its therapeutic applications. Also studied will be how social contexts, political conditions, and cultural settings impact OT’s philosophical base as well as future professional endeavors in meeting society’s occupational needs. OCTH 521 - Introduction to Occupational Therapy Practice Framework and Spiritual Integration Credits 4
This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the OT Practice Framework, the basic tenets, and foundational constructs of the domain and processes that ground occupational therapy practice and build the profession’s vision. Students will explore how theological understanding of their faith can be integrated into spiritual care and occupational therapy practice. Core OT philosophy, scope and models of practice, ethics, terminology, OT’s domain of client factors, occupations, performance patterns, performance skills, contexts, and the process of providing OT services to facilitate a client’s engagement in meaningful daily occupations will be emphasized. OCTH 522 - Healthcare Administration and Management Credits 3
Presentation and discussion of current concepts and trends in the administration and management in occupational therapy practice. Challenges students to explore the various facets of occupational therapy management in a constantly changing health care environment. Grade Mode: A.

OCTH 524 - Applied Occupational Therapy Anatomy Credits 4
This course will review human anatomy as it relates to everyday occupation. Organs of the body, the musculoskeletal system, and nervous system will be examined on cadavers and/or cadaver simulations. Students will be responsible for understanding and identifying all areas of the body, including the respiratory, endocrine, skeletal, lymphatic, immune, nervous, digestive, muscular, urinary, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems. All systems, and how they apply to occupational participation, will be reviewed. All systems will be tied to occupational participation and daily activities. OCTH 530 - Clinical Reasoning: Activity Analysis, Planning & Documentation Skills Credits 3
Clinical reasoning is at the core of all areas of OT practice. This course presents the historical development and application of models of practice, frames of reference, and theoretical constructs that are foundational to occupational therapy. Students will learn to exercise clinical reasoning skills by applying critical thinking to client case study problems, identifying and examining relevant data, determining best practice interventions, adapting meaningful activities as therapeutic interventions to meet and advocate for clients’ occupational needs, collaborate on an interprofessional level, complete reimbursable documentation, and reflect upon the entire OT process. This course provides foundational knowledge of quantitative research methodology with emphasis on how to formulate clear clinical questions and find, evaluate, analyze, and interpret research literature in order to apply evidence to support occupational therapy practice. Grade Mode: A.

OCTH 540 - Qualitative Research for Evidence-Based Practice Credits 3
This course provides students with an introduction to qualitative research methods utilized in generating and analyzing data relevant to the field of occupational therapy. An overview of different theories, ethics, data collection analysis and strategies, as well as approaches to qualitative inquiry will be covered. Students will also work collaboratively in a team application employing methods learned in class to complete qualitative research projects. Grade Mode: A.

OCTH 541 - Applied Occupational Therapy Neuroscience Credits 4
This course provides students with the basic understanding of foundational neuroscience (structures and functions of the brain and nervous system) that is integral to one's engagement and ability to perform daily occupations. Students will be presented with topics including neuroanatomy, nervous system functions, vasculature of the brain, functions of different neurological systems, learning and memory, cranial nerves, development and normal aging of the nervous system, pathological conditions that affect occupational performance throughout the lifespan, and considerations for occupational therapy practice. Students will explore a variety of questions regarding disability and suffering through the lens of Scripture, the writings of theologians, and their own personal experiences working with individuals with disabilities or illnesses and learn to formulate appropriate responses to injury, illness, disability, and suffering from a biblical perspective. This course will cover leadership skills related to business aspects of practice, marketing of services, quality management, servant leadership, liability issues, requirements for credentialing and licensure, professional development requirements, supervision of personnel, professional engagement, and organizational ethics. OCTH 552 - Clinical Applications: Orthopedics, Modalities & Assistive Technology Credits 3
Principles on the application, theory, and evidence behind the use of both thermal and electrical modalities in clinical practice; orthopedics applied to a variety of patient conditions; and assessment, selection, training, and follow-up with clients in the use of assistive technologies to enable and enhance participation in a meaningful occupation. OCTH 570 - Mental Health Foundations for Occupational Therapy Credits 6
An overview of the different mental health conditions that can impact quality of life and role participation, and a focus on interventions and techniques to facilitate positive occupational participation. Different mental health conditions will be presented in this course that occupational therapists can assist in treatment in conjunction to interprofessional collaboration. Different occupation-based treatments in context of group and individual sessions will be discussed. A focus on psychosocial concerns will be reviewed in alignment with course materials. OCTH 571 - Pediatrics Foundations in Occupational Therapy Credits 6
This class will provide foundational knowledge of the practice of pediatric occupational therapy focusing on the occupational development of children from infancy through adolescence. Various theories and service delivery models will be explored to gain a better understanding of childhood occupations, performance components affecting daily occupational engagement, and how different conditions, culture, context, and the environment affect a child's ability to meet activity demands. This course will expose students to the process of OT evaluation, treatment planning, intervention, and documentation using clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice concepts. An emphasis on compassion care with a Christ-centered approach, team collaboration, ethics, and applicable legislative mandates will also be addressed. OCTH 572 - Adult/Geriatrics Physical Rehab Foundations for Occupational Therapy Credits 6
This course will review conditions that impact adult conditions, and what conditions can be exacerbated with age. The course will cover in detail what conditions most frequently impact adults, and how occupational therapists can provide support for overcoming barriers to everyday life through environmental adaptations, techniques/strategies, and occupation-based interventions. OIder aging conditions will also be discussed, and a review of caregiving training and environmental and technological supports will be discussed and implemented as well. Students will have an understanding of conditions, interventions, and supports to help adults and aging adults with gaining as much independence and purpose in their everyday lives as possible. This is the first in a series of three hybrid fieldwork experiences which provides students with opportunities to implement professional behavior, observe treatment, and practice skills introduced in the classroom through simulations, site visits, and/or faculty-led experiences with populations serviced in traditional, nontraditional, and emerging mental health OT practice settings. The goal of Level I Fieldwork is “to introduce students to the fieldwork experience and develop a basic comfort level with an understanding of the needs of clients” and includes “experiences designed to enrich didactic coursework through directed observation and participation in selected aspects of the OT process” (AOTA 2005). This course is designed to prepare students for one of their two Level II Fieldwork experiences and professionalism in OT practice. Essential aspects of this seminar will address professionalism in the workplace, incorporation of research evidence for OT practice, integrity, ethics, critical thinking, individual/colleague accountability, self-reflection, therapeutic use of self, and development of clinical/professional reasoning processes by integrating knowledge and skills learned from previous and concurrent OT didactic coursework with fieldwork experiences. OCTH 611 - Fieldwork Level II - Clinical Internship Credits 4
This course is an in-person 12-week, full-time supervised clinical internship experience and is designed to promote clinical reasoning, ethical and reflective practice, professionalism, and expand knowledge, experience, and application of occupational therapy assessments and interventions related to the occupational performance and health of persons with various psychosocial and physical performance conditions. Occupational therapy student interns apply didactic and previous fieldwork knowledge to current clinical experiences and responsibilities. Level II fieldwork is intended to prepare students to become competent, entry-level, generalist occupational therapists. Clinical placements expose students to a variety of client ages (lifespan), diagnoses, and settings in both traditional and emerging practice areas. Grade Mode: C.
