Healthcare Management, B.S.

Mission

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management is to prepare Christian leaders, compelled by Christ's love, to be a relevant and redemptive voice in the changing world of healthcare. This major will prepare students to serve in a variety of health care settings providing information from both business and health care perspectives.

Degree Program

The Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Management is offered upon completion of the University baccalaureate and major requirements. Healthcare Management majors have excellent opportunities for employment in acute care facilities, physician offices, skilled nursing facilities, and public health settings. Students with a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare management will also be well equipped to pursue graduate education in business, nursing, health administration, or public health. Graduates of this program may be eligible to pursue professional certification from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or Project Management Institute (PMI), depending on current eligibility requirements and professional experience.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management, students will be able to:

  1.  Integrate biological, behavioral, cultural, and business factors to facilitate constructive interactions with individuals and groups in the healthcare setting (ULO 1,2, and 3).

  2. Effectively apply business principles, including systems thinking, to the environment in which healthcare workers function within the US healthcare system (ULO 1,3).

  3. Engage in the promotion of individual and organizational excellence through evidence-based practice (ULO 3).

  4. Practice Christ-centered ethical and professional conduct that includes a responsibility to the patient and community (ULO 1, 2, and 3).

Admission Requirements

  • Application to Biola University following the university’s general admission requirements.
  • Students who are interested in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing are first admitted to the recommended nursing program pathway major - the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management - before ultimately applying to, being accepted to, and changing their major to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
  • Additional requirements for transfer students (25 college credits or more) interested in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing:
    • The student should have no more than one C (U.S. letter grade or equivalent) in any science prerequisite courses.
    • The student must have no repeated science courses.
    • The student must have a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.2.

Curriculum Requirements

Healthcare Management majors meet the Core Curriculum requirement in behavioral science, mathematics, and science within the major. The foreign language requirement is met by two years of high school study in the same language or four credits of college foreign language. COMM 235, PHIL 215, and BBST 4657 are recommended Core Curriculum courses.
